About Change

Resolution or Commitment? Is there a difference?

The beginning of a new year is when we often resolve to make one, or many, changes in our lives. But how often do those changes really occur? How long does the change last?

Without an attitude of commitment, a resolution often ends up being another good idea that we don’t get around to manifesting or sustaining. I find the following passage to express an eloquent and effective rationale for commitment:

“Until one is committed, there is hesitancy, the chance to draw back, always ineffectiveness concerning all acts of initiative (and creation)…

… the moment one definitely commits oneself, then providence moves too.  All sorts of things occur to help one that would never have otherwise occurred...

...Whatever you can do or dream you can do, begin it.

Boldness has genius, power and magic in it.

Begin it now.”

(Goethe)

Consider the improvements you would like to make in your life - be they in work, family, love, friendship, leisure, or spirit – and imagine what might occur if you are fully committed, even if it is to only one change.

As you consider these changes you’d like to make in your life....

Relax, get comfortable and quiet, and spend some time considering these questions

¬    What does it look like to be fully committed to change?

      How does it feel?

¬    What has prevented you from making this adjustment in

      the past?

¬    What resources do you need to make long-term change?

¬    How have you successfully made changes in the past?

¬    Who or what might challenge the strength of your

commitment? How will you resist those challenges?

Remember that change isn’t limited to altering undesirable behaviors and bad habits – it is about creating something new. Regardless of the type of change and improvement you wish to make, your opportunity for success will be much greater with the attitude of commitment.

When we focus on attitude, we are focusing on our thoughts and beliefs. Do you know what your thoughts and beliefs are regarding change? Our thoughts have amazing power in our lives, influencing our moods and behaviors. Focusing on the thoughts and beliefs that are necessary for successful change is an important early step in your process.

Only in growth, reform, and change,

paradoxically enough,

is true security to be found.
